- How are AAdvantage Loyalty Points earned on flights?
- Flights credited to AAdvantage earn Loyalty Points equal to the AAdvantage miles awarded. On American-, British Airways-, Iberia-, Fiji Airways- and Oman Air-marketed fares that is spend-based — 5 miles per US dollar of base fare plus carrier charges at the entry tier, more with status. Every other Oneworld partner publishes a percentage-of-distance chart by booking class, which this calculator uses letter-for-letter — including the booking codes that earn nothing (several deep-discount Economy letters on Cathay Pacific, Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines and SriLankan earn zero). Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 17 December 2025 earn no miles and no Loyalty Points at all. One published nuance we don't model: Qantas-marketed flights between Australia/New Zealand and North America use a slightly richer chart for the C, D and S letters than the general Qantas table shown here.
- What counts toward status besides flying?
- Unusually among major programmes, Loyalty Points also accrue from co-branded credit-card spend and shopping partners — so a flying-only calculation understates how attainable AAdvantage status is for many members.
- When does the qualification year run?
- The AAdvantage qualification year runs from 1 March to the last day of February. Loyalty Points accumulate across that year toward an absolute threshold, and the counter is not reduced when you reach a tier.
